Dining tables may require re-application after just 3 to 5 years while dressers and coffee tables may only need re-application after 10 years or more. Sometimes, people want the protection of polyurethane but the soft sheen and buttery feel of wax. So what is the correct way to use both wax and poly? This past Fall I refinished this antique dresser with a black Polyshades stain. Polyshades stain has an oil-based polyurethane built right into the mix. The rule of thumb is to apply poly then wax.
Wax should always be the final topcoat applied to a piece of furniture. I once painted a cabinet that crackled after each layer of paint. I sealed it with poly, re-painted, and the paint continued to crackle. Apparently the cabinet had years of buildup of furniture polish aka wax and was not allowing the paint and poly to properly adhere.
If you prefer to poly a piece of furniture that already has a waxed finish, you must first remove the wax by wiping it down with mineral spirits or a TSP solution. Be sure the area is very well ventilated, wear protective gloves, and I always wear a P rated respirator mask.
In this stained dresser example I showed you how we applied a wax over a polyurethane topcoat. You can also use this method over paint. Would you use a gloss or matte poly? And how long would you wait after the final poly coat to apply the wax?
I use a satin poly although a matte poly would provide the needed protection too. Sometimes I use the brush-on poly and sometimes the wipe-on poly. Even placing a dresser that has a wax next to a warm heater or in direct sunlight has the potential for the wax to melt. Good luck with your project! I chalk painted and waxed my dining room table. Will steel wool take off the wax enough to put the poly on after?
Don't Like the wax much. Want a more durable finish. Thanks in advance. Google Sponsor Google Sponsor. Join Date Feb Location virginia Posts 4, Join Date Jul Posts I highly doubt any finish will stick over wax.
Wax is meant to be applied and then wiped down. I am not against trying this technique again for highlighting certain areas of my pieces. The issues I see with using the dark wax is that clear wax activates it when applied on top. This means you are removing the dark wax with every stroke of the fresh clear wax. Also wax is activated by heat so a hot laptop will melt the wax right off.
I love a waxed finish! I really do.. However I am very skeptical about the durability of it. I feel like the waxed finish is a fad.. I am not sure that is has the properties to properly seal a finished piece of furniture. Wax needs to be reapplied every few months.
It is meant to enhance the finish not seal it. Re: how long to add sealant then wax? It usually takes hours to really get the max durability from sealant bonding to paint completely.
As a general rule, the most durable product should always be used as the base, so for example if you were working with a sealant and a wax , the sealant would be your base layer that is then topped with the wax. Because sealants are lab-made, they are designed to provide a higher level of durability than wax products. Simply put - if you prefer a lasting protection with a beautiful shine, go with the sealant.
If you prefer the unmatched warm glow created by a natural carnauba wax product, go with the car wax. Applying New Silicone Sealant Over Old Sealant Applying new sealant over the top of old, leaking sealant never works as the adhesion of the existing sealant to the bath or shower, and tiles, is what counts.
