The kinds they put under pots to keep the water from getting on to the floor. And you can use that as a giant ash tray. I have used Romman lemonwood in the past and had decent luck. Just pick it up with tongs and blow on it lightly.

I have been using Mesquite coals meant for BBQ for well over 2 years now.. Wood Oak works as well. I personally feel safer using designated hookah coals and dont mind spending a little more money to get them. After all its a hobby and Hobbies tend to cost money.
