This is clearly not INRI. While the references in Matthew and Mark do not reveal to us which languages the accusation was written in, Luke and John DO tell us. This phrase was written in the languages of Hebrew, Greek and Latin verse As an interesting note, the phrase "King of the Jews" can be found eighteen times in the four gospel accounts.
The book of John accounts for one third of its New Testament uses. The phrase is first used in the Bible by the Persian Magi when they were seeking Christ in order to worship him Matthew One reason why the abbreviation INRI is used to represent the charge against Christ is that scholars generally used the wording presented in the Gospel of John as opposed to Matthew, Luke or Mark.
They did this because they felt the reference to Christ's hometown of Nazareth, in the accusation against him, were a more complete and accurate recording of the charge against him than the other three gospel accounts.
Another reason why INRI, extracted from the book of John, is used is due to an early translation of the Scriptures into the Latin language. It was common in the day to place the charge on the cross above the head of the accused. But how incredible it is that by leveling this charge against the Messiah, Pilate was actually confirming his identity!
Because they knew the Messiah would have the scepter Genesis In other words, the Messiah would be acknowledged as the One with authority and would be hailed as King. The bronze serpent in the wilderness was lifted up on a wooden pole -just as would later happen to the Son of Man.
He deserved the punishment for deceiving Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. And Man deserves the punishment for following the serpent instead of following God. The serpent was bronze because bronze is the Biblical metal of judgment. And the serpent deserved judgment. When the perfect God-man Jesus hung from the cross, he took the punishment for us -so that if we would believe in him and repent from our rebellion against him, we would be able to spend eternity with him in great joy!
The Old Testament scriptures tell us Messiah would be born in Bethlehem, but then Matthew tells us in Matthew that Jesus would be called a Nazarene based on what the OT prophets said. Is this what Matthew meant? They further say this is why the Rabbis objected to the inscription of I. INRI actually never appears in the Bible.
For we saw his star when it rose in the East and have come to worship him. John Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it above the head of Jesus on the cross. Psalm Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? Other sources state that it was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek instead. This phrase was written on the cross in three different languages so that everyone who saw it knew what Jesus was being charged with.
People now use this to be reminded that Jesus is king, and they do not use it in a mocking way in modern times. This is seen in the Gospel of John. After Jesus was captured in Jerusalem, Pilate asked Jesus if he was indeed King of the Jews, but he did not confirm or deny the claim. His ambivalence was taken as an admission of guilt so Pontius Pilate considered him a threat to the Roman empire. He was condemned to die by crucifixion.
This is considered a Chrisogram, or a monogram that forms an abbreviation for Jesus Christ. This is considered a Christian symbol. The letters INRI each stand for something different.
