Ares is the Greek god of war, known by the Romans as Mars. If Leto is playing a Program named "Ares," does that mean he exists in the real world, too? The virtual Grid in Tron: Legacy is not actually the same Grid from the original film. This is important because when Flynn built the new Grid, he somehow, accidentally, created something in the system that gave rise to Isomorphic Algorithms, better known as ISOs.
Short explanation: These are random sentient programs that were not created by the Users. Quorra was the most famous ISO in Legacy , but by the end of the movie, we don't have a good sense of what is going to happen to her people next. We also have no idea what bringing her into the "real world" did to people's perception of A. Did Sam keep her a secret? Would people even believe that she was born in a computer? The ending of Legacy is kind of like the ending of Ducan Jones' film Moon.
You get the sense that all of humanity is going to change because of this very specific revelation about the nature of life, and then If Legacy was the last movie in the Tron mythos, this would be fine.
But because this new movie is coming, literally everything about the ISOs, and Quorra in specific has to be talked about. This is the biggest change Legacy made from the first film.
Although we don't know any particulars about the plot for the third film, we're expecting it to follow in that tradition. One thing to not expect, though, is for Tron 3 to continue the storyline that began in Tron and was continued in Tron: Legacy.
According to Variety , the third installment won't be a direct sequel to either of the previous films. This makes sense, considering the amount of time that has passed and the fact that the ending of the second film certainly holds up as the conclusion to that particular narrative. And, of course, the larger world created by those first two films leaves provides plenty of buttressing to build a whole new narrative. That being said, when Tron 3 was originally in development, it was meant to be a direct sequel with Tron: Legacy 's stars returning, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Furthermore, Leto was already attached to the project back when it was a sequel. If he's playing the same character, it could mean that, even if it's a standalone film, there is still a strong connection to the previous two entries into the franchise.
While the lack of any plot details might be frustrating to some, knowing that the film will be an all-new story opens a lot of doors for speculation. Will any of the franchise's previous characters return?
Will we get some kind of major time jump? How will the next film further develop the world of the Grid? We'll have to wait until Tron 3 finishes loading to find out. Will we have to wait another decade for Tron 3's release date?
What do we know about the plot of Tron 3? In the 10 years since it was first revealed, there have quite a few stars and stops, refreshes, and more. Back in late , shortly before the release of Tron: Legacy , it was reported that Disney was throwing around the idea of returning to the franchise with a third installment. A lot changed following the release of the underperforming sequel in December , but just a month after the sci-fi action thriller dropped in theaters, the House of Mouse was still on board with the idea of continuing the franchise for years to come.
That momentum would continue into the summer of , as in June of that year, it was revealed that David DiGilio, whose biggest credit to that point was the ABC fantasy drama series Once Upon a Time , had been hired to write a script.
But would it stick? But more details were soon on the way, just not what anyone wanted to hear. The Disney hammer, well, axe, came down in May when it was revealed by The Hollywood Reporter that the studio was putting its Tron 3 plans on ice and placing the metaphorical tarp back onto the old arcade machine.
A little less than two years after the plug had seemingly been pulled on the Tron franchise, the old arcade machine came back to life with the news that Disney was having second thoughts about ending the franchise and instead wanted to go back to the drawing board with Jared Leto. But just like all things in Hollywood, Tron 3 would remain a fluid project with plenty of changes ahead.
A few years went by before there was much news on the Tron 3 front, but things really started cooking in the summer of with a number of developments in the dormant franchise.
