Abstract Objectives This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of hypertension and its associated factors among residents of Hosanna town in Hadiya Zone. Introduction Hypertension is persistent elevation of BP above this normal range [ 1 ] and is classified into different groups based on causes and degree of severity [ 2 — 5 ]. Main text Methods Study design and setting The study was conducted in Hosanna town, the capital of Hadiya Zone, located at a distance of km southwest of Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia.
Sample size and sampling technique The desired sample size for our study was estimated by taking prevalence of hypertension Inclusion and exclusion criteria Individuals below the age of 25 years, those above the age of 64 years, pregnant mothers and disabled people were excluded from the study.
Data analysis techniques The collected data were cleaned and entered to Epi-Data version 3. Results A total of participants were involved in the study which gives response rate of Table 1 Socio-demographic characteristics of study participants in Hosanna town Open in a separate window.
Physical measurements The mean systolic and diastolic BP reading for the study participants were Physical activity Fifty-seven Factors associated with hypertension The presence or absence of significant association between independent and outcome variables was determined. Discussion The overall prevalence of hypertension in this study was Conclusion High prevalence of hypertension was noted among the study participants. Limitations This study is cross-sectional; therefore, we cannot ascribe causality to any of the associated factors.

The Hosanna kindergarten classes recently participated in a dedication ceremony for their new facilities at Adams Thermal Academy.
The kids have already moved into their new classrooms which is right next to their new playground and their new bathrooms. In fact, the kindergarteners now have their own, exclusive section of the school campus - NO big kids allowed!
So the kindergarten class celebrated at the dedication ceremony by singing some happy songs and they even wrote a poem that was shared by a beautiful young lady in a traditional Ethiopian dress. Here is a translation of the poem that the kindergarten class wrote.
The beauty of our rooms and our playground They are very lovely, very beautiful indeed Adams Academy, my school, I am grateful to you Adams Academy, my school, you have cared for me You saw our small space and you made it big Big classrooms, painted beautifully Now we are free to learn without troubles Our space is filled with plants and fresh air We have our very own new bathrooms To wash our hands with soap and clean water So we come to class both clean and healthy Our teachers are happy and their faces are bright We have heard every one of them express their happiness Adams Academy, my school, I am grateful to you I will speak all day long of how thankful I am to learn here Thank you for hearing me As you can tell by the poem, this was a very special ceremony attended by staff from the U.
And if you ask the kids, they also enjoyed chasing the drone that came to take photos and video of the event. Our deepest thanks go out to those who gave to this important project. We featured the kindergarten building in our annual newsletter and our supporters provided generous gifts which helped to provide these new facilities to our kindergarten kids.
As you can see, you made quite an impact upon these future leaders of Ethiopia! It was when Ethiopia began emerging from a socialist education system to a federal system. By , there were marked increases in the number of children accessing public education along with decreased illiteracy and drop-out rates. However, the poor and rural areas of Ethiopia were not participating in these positive education trends.
Also in , Ethiopia was still one of the top 10 countries in the world with the highest out-of-school children populations 2 million. So what happened in ? In September of that year in the capital of the SNNPR southern Ethiopia , a small private school reserved only for the "poorest of the poor" was established. Today, we know this school as Adams Thermal Academy Hosanna. And just as it was back in , our objective remains the same - to reserve every seat in our KG through 12th grade program for those children who have no other opportunity to get an education.
Our enrollment criteria remains the same, welcoming only children who would otherwise be caught in the perpetual cycle of generational poverty.
Our only requirement is that they come and learn. Adams Thermal Academy provides everything a child will need for school, including clothing, nutrition, healthcare and transportation. Our Hosanna campus was launched in with three buildings classrooms, administration, kitchen and a garden. The school offered kindergarten through 4th grade and enrolled students in its first year. From the beginning, the school was designed to grow in grade levels and overall capacity until the campus would ultimately become a full, K academic program.
That milestone was reached in This fall we're preparing to pull students off the streets and into the classroom for the academic year. Since , we've added two libraries, a kindergarten building, an eating area, storage capacity, a sports field and a high school.
In just the past 36 months, we've added science and computer labs as well as high-speed internet access to our program. And we're currently under construction with more classrooms, bathrooms and fencing to keep our children safe throughout the day. What a privilege it's been to watch this school grow and flourish in a country so desperately in need of education solutions.
And we're most humbled to have the opportunity to share this journey with friends and supporters from all throughout North America. Thank you to each of you who have loved and cared for these children and our incredible staff in Hosanna. You are precious to us. And God receives all the glory for orchestrating the people, resources and timing to make this miracle our reality.

Being enrolled at the Adams Thermal Academies provides an education and a path out of poverty in the long run. But the schools also provide much needed meals to the students each day, which they're going without during this lock-down.
In response, Adams Thermal Foundation working through the staff at both schools is distributing food rations to the students in an effort to provide nutrition and avoid critical food insecurity. Students at the two schools are receiving corn flour, vegetable oil, rice, and macaroni, as well as soap and masks to help mitigate the pandemic threat.
